Term 3 Learning

We have been involved in lots of great learning activities this term.

We have used three of the Thinking Hats to reflect on our learning.

OLYMPICS FESTIVAL

Yellow Hat – positives

We got to do sports activities.

There were lots of people there.

We learned lots of skills from the helpers.

White Hat – information

We did 5 activities – games, soccer, hockey, rugby and athletics.

There were lots of people there from lots of schools.

We were the team from the Netherlands, and we had flags.

Red Hat – feelings

“I was happy because it was fun doing lots of different activities.

“I was excited because there were sports”.

“I was nervous because there were lots of different schools”.

“I was happy because I scored a goal”.

“I was excited because there were so many people”.

GYMNASTICS

Yellow Hat – positives

Everyone gets a turn at all the activities

We can learn more about gymnastics.  Then we might be in the Olympics one day.

Everybody has fun learning gymnastics skills.

White Hat – information

We do gymnastics in the hall.

We use lots of equipment.

It is an activity for lots of people.

Red Hat – feelings

“I feel so excited because we could learn lots of gymnastics skills."

“We feel scared because we don’t want to fall off the beam.”

RECORDER

Yellow Hat – positives

We will share our learning with our families at the end of the year.

We are learning to play music.

We are getting better each week.

White Hat – information

We have learned the notes B and A already!

We hold the recorder in our left hand.

Mrs Cawood teaches us the recorder on Tuesdays.

We are learning to read music.

Red Hat – feelings

“I feel happy because I am learning another instrument.”

“We feel excited because everyone is learning together.”

“We are happy because everyone is playing nicely and persevering”.

DISCOVERY TIME – LOVELY LEMONS!

Yellow Hat – positives

 The syrup was really sweet.

We made yellow lemony playdough.

We got to taste things we made like lemon syrup, juice and ice blocks.

We discovered how lemon juice can make invisible writing.

White Hat – information

We discovered lemons taste sour on different parts of our tongue.

If you roll a lemon to soften it, you will get more juice.

A lemon can work like a battery.

Red Hat – feelings

"I felt happy because everyone was helping to squeeze the lemons".

"I felt excited when the iron made the invisible come out".

"We felt disappointed when the lemon battery didn't work.  But we showed perseverance and tried our best and tried different things".

CHURCH VISIT

By Van, Samuel, and Luke 

Yellow Hat – positives

We got to see and listen to Mr Slade who knows lots about our parish.

Van got to wear a cloak.

We got to meet some of the parish helpers.

White Hat – information

The bell is really loud outside but not inside.

There is a library at the parish offices.

father wears purple when it is a sad time, and gold for happy and special times.

Red Hat – feelings

“I felt proud because I got to wear the cloak and ring the bell.”

“I felt nervous when we went upstairs”.

MANDELAS

We created mandelas as a way of praying.  The colours we chose remind us of God and Jesus, and creation.

WALT use the Thinking Hats, and to play tennis

Big John came to teach us Grasshopper Tennis.

Yellow Hat Thinking:

Big John knows how to do everything!  Ciaran

We all had turns.  Sofia

It was great that we could learn how to play tennis well.  Jake

We learned lots of different things.  Stevie

White Hat Thinking:

We did tennis on Fridays on the back courts.  Kiwa

Big John was the tennis expert who was our coach.  William

We used real tennis racquets and balls.  Darius

We practised the skills Big John showed us.  Van

Red hat Thinking:

I felt happy at tennis because we met a new person at St James. Zach

I felt excited because I didn’t know what was going to happen each time.  Gihara

I felt happy because I learned new things at tennis.  Ella

I felt excited because we got to play lots of cool games.  Ani

Black Hat Thinking:

Pulling the ball up like an elevator on my foot was hard.  Linnea

It was really hard to throw the ball over your back and catch it.  Isabelle

A hard part was doing new things that were really tricky.  Emily.

Cheese-cutting was really hard.  Isabella

Green Hat Thinking:

Maybe Big John could make a club at school for tennis players.  Samuel

Maybe we could have more sessions.  Luke

Maybe we could have tennis at another time when it’s not so cold. Monet

Maybe Big John could make up some new activities.  Rachel

Maybe Big John could take us to play against some other schools.  Jasmine

We loved our sessions, and hope Big John can come back sometime.



Book Week

Book Week was fantastic, especially Dress Up day.  We dressed up as a character from a book, and did a parade in the hall for our grandparents and other older friends.

WALT write a great recount about Cross Country

Me and my friends went to the Cross Country.  The mums and dads cheered.  I came third.  It was cool and I was very exhausted.  I ran good and my friend Jacob came first.  It was a sunny day at Hokowhitu Park.
Van

Last Tuesday it was Cross Country.  Cross Country is a big, big, race! We have to run as fast as we can.  Lots of people were clapping and cheering. I felt puffed when I finished the race.  Then mummy gave me a drink that me made better very fast.

Samuel

One day ago we walked to Cross Country.  I was so excited because i came first!  My mum and dad were there to support me.  I really tried my best because Tyrah's friend was in the race. And did you know she is a really good runner? Heaps of other people are good as well.  When we had our turn we started walking back to school.  The big kids had to stay there because they had to run around the big lap.  There were big kids to help us and teachers showing us where to go.  Itr was at Hokowhitu Park.  I feel so sad because the Seniors have to do three laps!  They must have been puffed!

WALT to be scientists and use the scientific process

We explored fresh water by looking at it, smelling, tasting, and feeling it.  Then we added salt to the water and did the same thing.  Then we compared the fresh water and salt water using a Venn diagram.  The only things that were the same were that they both are liquid and runny and cold!

                                                    



Question:

Then we wondered what would happen if we froze the fresh water and the salt water, so we set up an experiment.

Hypothesis:

12 of us thought the fresh water would freeze first.  12 of us thought the salt water would freeze first!

Experimentation:

We made the test fair because the only thing we changes was salt in one bottle.

We put the bottles into the freezer, and checked them every hour.  We recorded what we saw.

Conclusion:

The fresh water froze first.  We thought this might be because there is nothing extra in the water.

We also discovered that the salt water started to melt very quickly, and that icy condensation formed on the outside of the bottle.  The fresh water condensation was just water. The fresh water took all day to melt.
